Search Engine Overview

Search engines like Google and directories like Yahoo! index and catalog millions and millions of web pages, making it possible for us to find the information or web page we’re looking for in a matter of seconds.

But how do the sites we find get there? And who decides which ones are at the top of the list? A Website appears in a search results page either because a crawler-based search engine found it and indexed it, or because a human (you?) submitted it to a directory where human editors reviewed it.

As search engines and directories have evolved and grown in number, along with the number of Web sites on the Internet, the “science” of search has become more complex. And now your Website that enjoyed top placement in 1996 is buried among 1,234,001 others while your competition is on the first page. It’s time to take control of the situation!

“Search Engine Optimization”, SEO for short, is the buzz term for making a Website findable. For crawler based engines, this refers to the way a Website is constructed to match up with search engine algorithms and indexing criteria. For directories, it refers to the information, or content, included on your web pages, and the information you send to a directory’s human editors.

In addition to crawler-based search engines and directories, there are pay-per-clicks, such as Overture and Google AdWords Select, that enable you to gain placement based on how much you’re willing to pay, and paid inclusion engines, like Inktomi, that guarantee that your site will be crawled by its web-indexing robot, Slurp, at regular intervals.
